Anti-war campaigners are planning to target Sunday's cricket World Cup final at Wanderers to protest against the US-led coalition strikes on Iraq.

"The Australian government, despite widespread opposition from the public, has come out firmly in support of the US-led war and the (coalition) wants to use the World Cup as an opportunity to support the Australian people against the government's warmongering," said South Africa's Anti-War Coalition spokesman Salim Vally.

Vally anticipated hundreds of protesters gathering in a "sizable and very visible" demonstration starting an hour before the Australia vs India match starts at 10 am local time (1330 IST).

"We've received an appeal from anti-war groups in Australian civil society asking us to target this event as an opportunity to protest against Australia's involvement in the war," Vally said.

He said police and security authorities were aware of the protest plans.
