Very common system prevalent in the northern reaches of the Narmada valley (districts of Jabalpur, Narsingpur, Damoh and Sagar in Madhya Pradesh), this system of cultivation of runoff farming. Rainwater is held in embanked fields till sowing time.

The benefit of this system is that there is no excess water when the cultivation finally takes place. A peculiar kind of a weed called kans grows in these parts. With water remaining stagnant for a very long time, the weed rot away.

Pat

In the Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh the people of Bhil tribe have deviced a novel way of irrigating fields on hills. A pat is an irrigation channel cut across the typical terrain of the region to divert water from swift flowing hill streams. It is constructed using stones lined with teak leaves and mud.
