Maharani Gayatri Devi, a former royal offered on Tuesday to pay the medical expenses of a 12-year-old Iraqi boy who lost his arms in a missile strike on Baghdad. Gayatri Devi, wife of the former ruler of the princely state of Jaipur, said she was moved by a Reuters photograph of Ali
Ismaeel Abbas which was on the front page of a local newspaper.

"I want to help the boy in getting back his limbs. I will bear the expenses," Gayatri Devi said.

"For that, I have to find out the whereabouts of the boy and where he can be operated upon. If the facilities are good in Iraq then he can be operated in Iraq or else anywhere in the world."

Abbas was asleep when a missile obliterated his home and most of his family, leaving him orphaned, badly burned and blowing off both his arms.

"Can you help get my arms back? Do you think the doctors can get me another pair of hands?" Abbas asked. "If I don't get a pair of hands I will commit suicide," he said with tears spilling down his cheeks.

Gayatri Devi, a former politician, backs many charitable and educational institutions in her home state of Rajasthan.
