Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday attacked the BJP government in Gujarat for its "poor handling of the cooperative banks scam that resulted in depositors, mainly from the middle class, losing lakhs of rupees".
"People from middle and working class, who had deposited their hard-earned savings in these banks, have lost everything due to the government's complacent attitude and its failure to take action against the guilty," Sonia said addressing a public meeting at Randhikpur rpt Randhikpur assembly constituency in Dahod district in the last leg of her campaign for the crucial December 12 elections.
Also, a large number of people have lost their jobs due to closure of banks and no action had been taken by the government so far, she alleged.
"People have the right to ask the governemnt about its misdeeds as people have elected them to power," she said adding that people are supreme and not the government. "It is the people who elects the government".
Sonia said that the elected government should perform its duties like a head of the family and take care of the weaker sections, ensuring at the same time that injustice was not done to the others.
She said people have realised that the BJP government in the state was "responsible for creating an atmosphere of fear and hatred among communities".
Attacking the Narendra Modi government, Sonia said women in the state were the most neglected lot.
