IN A daring step to fight the practice of dowry in society, a bride, just before the wedding ceremony, refused to marry the groom. Instead, she married another youth, who was against the dowry system.

This incident took place during the marriage function of a family at Ghamhapur basti in Chitrasenpur village under the Mirzamurad police station here on Tuesday night. The barat of Atul Singh, had come from Baburi area in Chandauli.

It was received by Tez Bahadur Singh, father of the bride and relatives. A lot of baratis had started dining and the ritual of ‘dwarchar’ was slated to be performed soon.

Everything was going on smoothly. Meanwhile, things took a dramatic turn with the groom’s maternal uncle asking for cash to buy a car instead of a motorcycle finalised prior to the engagement. When the bride’s parents refused, the uncle did not let the bridegroom sit at the venue of the dwarchar.

In view of this awkward situation, the bride’s parents were embarrassed before their family and friends. A gentleman from the bride’s side suggested to the father to marry his daughter with another youth, Jitendra, their distant relative.

Jitendra was also present in the function. The youth in order to save the family’s prestige agreed to marry her without any dowry.

When teh groom’s family heard the news, they rushed back to settle for a motorcycle only. But the irate parents of the bride and villagers asked them to leave.
