PREPARATIONS HAVE begun for the annual technical and cultural extravaganza of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) — Effervescence-MMVI — that is all set to begin from October 26.

The three-day extravaganza, which was earlier scheduled for kick-off on October 12, will now coincide with the first-ever alumni meet of the institute. Several intellectually stimulating events, both on-line and on-campus, have been planned for the festival.

"The technical and cultural fest subscribes to the basic idea of innovating for the future and serves as a perfect platform for the participants from all over the country to exploit their talents and skills to the best.

What sets it apart from the hoard of technical festivals, is the fact that it brings people from various academic, social and regional backgrounds in one arena to foster an atmosphere of learning, unlearning and relearning through an application-oriented approach," said IIIT-A Director Dr MD Tiwari.

Over the years, the participation in Effervescence has seen exponential growth.

"Last year, in addition hundreds of in-house participation, it witnessed a participation of a large number of guest students from dozens of colleges, including IITs and IIMs. This year we are confident that the fest will attract double the number that participated in 2005 thanks to it becoming one of the most eagerly awaited technical events of the country over the years," he added.

IIIT-A has formed several committees, comprising students and faculty members as advisors for the festival. The institution has made every effort to ensure the success of the programme and this can be gauged from the fact that it has also formed a technical committee and a web management committee.

Prabhash Dhyani, a BTech-2004 student and a member of the Effervesence-MMVI's technical committee, said that the on-line events, for which the registrations were already on, would begin from October 26 and continue for two days.

"It will feature events like 'Konqueror' in which a participant will have to hunt the treasure by unlocking the mystery, 'Al-Khawarizm' (a programming contest), 'Segmentation Fault', a debugging contest, 'Platzen', a cryptography contest) and 'Purplexuz', the puzzle corner. Other on-line events include 'Gladiator', Al bot programming using Java for robots and 'Cold Fire', the hackers arena where a student will have to show his mettle by hacking a secure server," Prabhash said.

Pankaj Trivedi, another BTech-2004 student and a member of the Effervesence-MMVI's technical committee, said that the on-campus events would begin from October 27 and continue till October 28.

"Events have been divided into sub-heads:

1) Technical events, 2) cultural events, 3) management events, 4) celebrity night and 5) informals," he said. The technical events includes 'IT Guru' which will be a heptathlon for the geeks. They will have to navigate their way through rigorous rounds and reach the ultra-final round where they will be interviewed in your area of expertise. "Other events include Anvesha:

The lecture series, Magnum Opus: The Open Software Design Contest, Web Kriti: Event designed to test web-designing skills as a complete set and 'A-I-Pod', an event where a small robot mice has to solve a 16x16 maze. In this contest the contestant or team of contestants design and build small self-contained robots (micromice) to navigate a maze in the shortest possible time.

The cultural events will consist of 'Cognoscentia', 'Innovation', 'Dance Events', A'-La-Mode, 'Incendiary' and 'Mélodieux'. Similarly, the management events will have Ad-Mania: Advertising contest, Solutte': Case study contest and Plannum: Business plan competition. "A set of 'Informals' events too have been planned which will include Juke Box (Dance Party), Gamer's Asylum (Gaming Competition), Bindas Bol (street plays), Silver Screen (movie screening), Fear Factor (gutsy challenges) and Cross Fire (debate competition). Other events include Antakshari (musical puzzles), Preksha (Hindi poetry competition) and Treasure Hunt (hunting hidden treasure).
