Candidates to take on Modi yet to be named

With just one working day left for filing of nominations for the December 12 assembly elections in Gujarat, opposition parties were yet to announce their candidate to contest against caretaker Chief Minister Narendra Modi from the prestigious Maninagar seat here.

"Not even a single nomination has been filed in this constitutency so far with just one working day (Monday) left," according to returning officer for Maninagar AV Zala.

Congress, NCP and others have not named any candidate for Maninagar.

Nearly 3,08,798 electorate including 1,44,689 women and over 20,000 minority community members will decide the fate of Modi in the polls.

As many as 10 candidates, including those from CPI, Shiv Sena, All India Rashtriya Janata Party, Samajwadi Party, apart from four independents had contested the 1998 election for the seat, which BJP won by a margin of 39,O50 votes beating a Congress candidate. Of the ten candidates, seven lost their deposits.

Maninagar, which witnessed lot of devastation in the earthquake last year, was also severely hit by post Godhra communal riots.
