Noted ad filmmaker Rakeysh Mehra, whose first film Aks had Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpai and Raveena Tandon in lead roles, is ready with his next film, Rang De Basanti to be released in the UK. Excerpts from the UTV interview.
How does it feel now that your
eagerly awaited Rang De Basanti is finally ready to be released in the UK?
(Smiles) Great! I feel like a pregnant mum who's delivered! I have a very healthy baby on hand, which I'm proud to show to the world.
What about the music of Rang De Basanti?
Rahman is a genius. The music has fetched extraordinary reviews and is doing well. We've all worked really hard on the music. None of the songs in the movie are "items". They're all part of the narrative. We'd scrap tunes, find new ones, create and re-create the songs until they gelled completely with the situations. And Aamir (Khan) was a part of the film's musical journey
This is the first time that Lata Mangeshkar has sung a duet with AR Rahman in Rang De Basanti.
To have Lataji singing for my film was a dream come true! She is THE Lata Mangeshkar! And to have her record a duet - Luka Chhupi Bahut Hui with Rahman for the first time was truly unbelievable. She's sung for Waheeda Rehman in the film "one legend sings for another legend!"
What's the film all about?
I don't want to say much except that it's a very contemporary film "a film about contemporary people and contemporary relationships. It has been shot in Delhi, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Punjab. Being a Delhi guy, this means a lot to me. The film takes off from an idea I've carried with me for nearly seven years now.
How did you get Aamir Khan to play your lead role?
The character is that of a simple man with a strong streak of integrity and dignity. We needed an actor who combines all these attributes and Aamir Khan was undoubtedly the first choice. Also, he gave his assent to the film immediately after listening to the script.
