WHILE HOUSE-to-house mopping up operation for culling was completed today in 23 villages in Burhanpur district, preparations were completed to begin culling in three villages of Barwani district that fall in 10 kms radius from Varhad Chopda Talaab village of Jalgaon district in neighbouring Maharashtra.

The villages where culling will begin for 2,500 odd birds include Belghat, Rajangaon and Dhaamnia. Five Rapid Action Response Teams have been constituted for this purpose in Barwani district and all basic preparations were made for the culling and disposal operation, Commissioner of Veterinary Services, Dr Rajesh Rajora told Hindustan Times.

Although there have been no positive samples from Barwani, the culling would be necessary because of the proximity of these villages from the affected Jalgaon village. Dr Rajora said the culling and disposal work along with house-to-house mop up has been completed successfully in villages around Ichhapur from where positive samples were confirmed on March 28.

Now the work of disinfecting is being carried on in 2,450 houses in these villages and would be completed by Friday. About 8,250 birds were culled in the 23 villages near Ichhapur.

He further mentioned 300 fresh samples from bordering districts of Maharashtra have been completed and sent out to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory for testing. A total of 114 samples collected from Burhanpur border are under testing at the HSADL and reports are expected soon.

Joint Director in-charge of HSADL Dr H K Pradhan told Hindustan Times tests were being conducted on the 114 samples. He said positive samples in the State were confined to only a very small area and were most probably the fallout of the spread of infection in villages of Jalgaon, which are very close to Ichhapur. However, further samples from the State are being screened he said.

Dr Rajora said a total ban had been clamped on export and import of poultry and poultry products from Jalgaon into Barwani, Burhanpur, Khargone and Jhabua district. Similarly export-import into Betul has also been stopped.
