jeans and say that the bell-bottoms and boot-cut styles will appear in the US stores this spring. “The pendulum is swinging away from skinny,” said Ryan Dziadul, a US spokesman for 7 For All Mankind. He adds, “There are millions of pairs out there. It’s about bell-bottoms.” Even the Delhi store of 7FAM in its latest collection, has a variety of boot-cut denims.
What about India?
Indian women, who are predominantly heavy on rear, have a reason to rejoice as boot-cut typically suit their body type. Designer Nida Mahmood, however, feels that the trend of boot-cut jeans still has two to three seasons to go before it can be labelled a trend in India. She says, “Skinny jeans are at its peak and taking to fashion trends is a slow process in India.”
Fashion stylist Edward Lalrempuia says, “There were people wearing boot-cuts even when it was the age of the skinny jeans.”
What suits us?
“Skinny looks good only on skinny girls. Similarly, not everybody look good in boot-cut. People with pear-shaped body type will look better in boot-cut,” adds Lalrempuia.
Team up a boot-cut with fitted t-shirts and jackets. “Watch the volume and to keep it balanced, opt for a figure-flattering top. Do
not go for very voluminous tops or even the puffed sleeves. Ensure that the boot-cut is not too flared. Keep the length of the top nothing beyond the waist and wear wedges,” says Mahmood.
Pants rule the roost
While jean makers are switching over from skinny to boot cut, there are khakis, corduroy and jodhpur tapered pants that are going the skinny way. Brands in the US are even increasing their non-denim apparel line to between 30-40 per cent from 5 per cent
during last year.
“In pants, the trend remains of the ones that are slightly baggy and pleated around your hip but are largely body fitting,” explains Mahmood. To achieve the winter look they can be teamed with jackets and knee-high boots.

Go off skinny, opt for the flare
Traders call for: The wide-leg jeans were a dominating part of the Magic apparel trade show, the twice-annual Las Vegas pilgrimage, where retail buyers order for the newest looks.
Still some time: Denims are considered a thing close to one’s personality and fashion designers and stylists in Delhi don’t propagate only boot-cut or only skinny. “I don’t think the boot-cut ever went out of fashion or that the skinny will ever be out of the wardrobe of those who think it is flattering to them,” says fashion stylist Edward Lalrempuia.
Style well: Maintain a balance in the volume. When wearing boot-cut denim, don’t go too baggy on the top. Accessorise with hoops and a scarf for the 60s and 70s look. Go for wedge heels as the ideal footwear option.
