2002 riots: Gujarat HC raps Modi govt for inaction
Pulling up the Narendra Modi government for "inaction and negligence" during the 2002 post-Godhra communal riots, the Gujarat high court on Wednesday ordered it to pay compensation for the religious structures that were damaged in the violence.

The court order came on a 2003 PIL
filed by the Islamic Relief Committee that had sought the court's directions to the government to pay compensation to the religious places damaged during the carnage that claimed 1,200 lives.

Soon after the verdict, the Congress demanded Modi's resignation. "After this observation (of the court), Modi has lost the moral right to continue as the CM," party spokesperson Rashid Alvi said.

The court also assigned 26 district judges to receive applications for compensation to religious structures and to send their decisions to the high court in six months.
