With 47 more persons dying, the death toll in the hooch tragedy rose to 95 today as Gujarat Police rounded up over 800 bootleggers and sealed scores of illicit liquor dens state-wide. Ninety-five people have died in the hooch tragedy, while 164 are still under treatment in city hospitals,
police said in a release today.

The mounting death toll sparked protests as people took to the streets damaging municipal buses and stoning policemen as the government drew flak from the Opposition Congress in the Assembly over one of the worst hooch tragedies in the state.

People from various parts of the city like Odhav, Amraiwadi, Raipur, Rakhial, Raipur and other areas continue to be admitted to hospitals.

According to the doctors, the number of fatalities could go up. Some of the patients are on dialysis and their condition was critical, they added.

Meanwhile, the police crackdown was on in districts like Surat, Valsad, Bharuch, Vadodara and others district bordering neighbouring states where liquor is not prohibited.
