In a front page report on Tuesday, the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna reacted furiously to demands for reopening the 1992-93 riot cases to look into lapses in investigation. The paper criticised those people and sections of the media demanding the implementation of the Srikrishna report,
which indicts several Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Interestingly, the newspaper has been held responsible by the Srikrishna Commission’s report for inciting communal passion and provoking the 1992-93 riots.

Objecting to a signature campaign in support of the reopening of riot cases, the newspaper published a report ‘Hindunan Phasavar Latkavynyastahi’ (Move to hang Hindus) which alleged that it was an action against the Hindu community.

It said why those seeking justice kept quiet when the apex court let off 11 people from the minority community for setting the Hindu-dominated Radhabai Chawl in Jogeshwari on fire. Seven Hindus were burnt alive in the fire on January 7, 1993.
