Intelligence agencies on Sunday warned that more attacks could take place in Assam, particularly in Guwahati and parts of western Assam, in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections. Intercepts and inputs have suggested that militants belonging to the banned ULFA and some Muslim
fundamentalist organisations might carry out explosions in Guwahati and places like Goalpara to disrupt the election process, sources in the agencies in Shillong said.

A batch of 20 armed rebels belonging to Islamic United Reformation Protest of India, Jaish-e-Muhammad and Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam have already sneaked into Kokrajhar and may target civilians, triggering communal clashes ahead of the elections, they warned.

On the other hand, ULFA militants are also intending to strike in busy areas of Guwahati like Paltan Bazar and Machkhowa before April 16, the sources said citing specific inputs which have been shared with other security agencies including the Assam police.

ULFA may take the help of illegal immigrants to plant explosives and escape detection.

Suspected ULFA militants had carried out a spate of bomb attacks in Assam killing over 10 and injuring scores over the last few weeks.
