The sweet Surabhi girl whose claim to movie fame remains Hum Aapke Hain Kaun turns director with her first Marathi feature film Rita. Says Renuka to a daily, "Direction is a passion and acting is a profession. I have always nurtured the dream of being a director and it’s a
dream come true."

The actress took a long break post motherhood, and that is when she started writing a Hindi script. "Once I had completed this psycho thriller in Hindi, I thought that my directorial debut has to be in Marathi and so I decided to go back to my roots,” she explains.

Rita is adapted from a Marathi novel, Rita Welingkar, which was written by Renuka's mother and eminent critic Shanta Gokhale. The movie, produced by Pooja Shetty Deora's Walkwater Media, was released recently.

“Rita as a novel appealed me as the story is humane and the characterisation is sensitive it also throws light on the necessity of women empowerment in the society. Rita makes mistakes in life as human beings do and how she grows in life and there is a positive message in the story."
