Skipper MS Dhoni backed Gautam Gambhir to shake off his poor form after another top order batting collapse in seaming conditions saw India finish the ODI series against England on a low.

In the last eight home ODIs, Gambhir has made one fifty - in the first game against England in
Rajkot. On Sunday, he saw off the pacers, but fell to spin.

"It is just a matter of time," said Dhoni. "In the last few games, I felt he was batting much better. He was not tentative, quite decisive in his stroke-making. Whatever shots he was playing, he was 100 percent there.

"We all know once he gets back into 100 percent form, he is an amazing cricketer to watch. He is one of the openers who play spin really well."

Off-spinner R Ashwin, whose struggle has been blamed on the bowler trying too many variations instead of focusing on his stock off-break, too was subdued in Dharamsala.

Dhoni said Ashwin was curbing his temptation to try too many things.

"He realised that and in the last few games he has bowled quite consistently. He has bowled in one area. (But) in the last two series, it's the first time we are playing with the five-fielder inside rule which means they have to bowl slightly differently. But I felt, in the last few games, he bowled well."
