More than a CLT20 game the tie between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians it was a test of Harbhajan Singh's capabilities as a leader which he himself had accepted on a day before the game. But in the end it was all about Lasith Malinga who lead his side to victory this time with the bat as Mumbai Indians won the game by three wicket and two balls to spare chasing 159.
Mumbai chasing a decent enough total would have ideally wanted the batsmen to mix caution with aggression. However that was not be as in a bid to keep the target in reach they lost half their side in the first ten overs with just 67 on board.
Opener Davy Jacobs was the first to depart as he came down the wicket to a wide one from Ashwin and missed it with Dhoni making no mistake. His opening partner Aiden Blizzard did display his hitting talent by brutally cutting one from Douglas Bollinger resulting in half a dozen runs but it foxed by Raina few balls later leaving his side at 50 for 2.
The Mumbai Indians middle already had a tough task on hand but Dawyne Brawo, Raina and R Ashwin made it tougher when they claimed the wickets of Ambati Rayadu, T Suman, Andrew Symonds and R Satish in quick succession. Kieron Pollard also couldn't impress.
Malinga the batsmen
Not many gave Mumbai a chance but Lasith Malinga (37 not out) showed he could be a batsman too. With skipper Harbhjan Singh, he added 53 runs for the 8th wicket to guide his side home in the last over.
Point to prove
Even though Harbhajan lost the toss, what followed wasn't bad as pacer Lasith Malinga struck with a lethal yorker to see Murali Vijay walk back in the fifth over. Malinga then ripped apart Suresh Raina's bat although not for his wicket. Harbhajan made regular changes trying as many as six bowlers including himself in the first 10 overs of the CSK innings but could not control the run flow.
Harbhajan was leading a depleted side with eight of their players including regular skipper Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma and Munaf Patel all out injured got another breakthrough in the tenth over when Raina (18) was stumped missing one from Kieron Pollard.
Mike Hussey continued his purple patch from recently concluded the Test series in Sri Lanka scoring 81 Later MS Dhoni and Albie Morkel who remained unbeaten on 22 and 2 respectively helped the side reach 158 which in the end was not enough.
