Pakistan and Essex leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has been released without charge by police after being arrested in connection with alleged cricket betting irregularities, police sources said on Wedneday.

Kaneria, 29, was arrested in May on suspicion of fraud and released on
bail without charge pending further inquiries.

Police sources said Kaneria had been released from his bail without charge. Later a police spokeswoman would only say that a 29-year-old man arrested in May had been released from his bail without charge.

Kaneria was arrested at the same time as Essex pace bowler Mervyn Westfield, 22, also of Chelmsford.

Westfield was also arrested on suspicion of fraud and released without charge on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police sources said Westfield remained on bail.

It is understood that inquiries centred on a one-day game -- a Pro40 win over Durham -- featuring Essex in September 2009.

Police were believed to have been investigating allegations surrounding spot betting, where gamblers bet on specific occurrences in a game.
