At 5.49pm on Tuesday, a six-page fax was transmitted from the offices of the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India to all state associations, making it clear that the endgame approached for Lalit Modi. Modi’s future has been placed before the BCCI’s Disciplinary
Committee, a body that has the power to recommend his expulsion from the Board.

<b1>Modi is currently suspended from all posts in the BCCI and the Indian Premier League, and his explanations to charges levelled against him have been found to be unsatisfactory.

"I am prima facie not satisfied sufficient cause has been shown by Mr Lalit K Modi to drop further proceedings,” wrote BCCI secretary N Srinivasan.

The secretary then goes on to explain in a point-by-point manner why Modi’s response to the showcause notices issued to him on April 26, May 6 and May 31 are unsatisfactory.

Interestingly, the Board has not sought any further explanation from Modi, choosing instead to refer the matter to its Disciplinary Committee.

The committee, which holds the power to recommend Modi’s expulsion from the BCCI, will be reconstituted shortly after BCCI president Shashank Manohar recused himself from the proceedings surrounding Modi.

If the Disciplinary Committee recommends Modi’s expulsion, it will have to be ratified by a Special General Meeting of the Board, by a three-fourths majority. “At the moment the way things are going, it will be 30-1 if it comes to a vote,” a BCCI insider said, suggesting only Punjab’s IS Bindra still backed Modi. This support, clearly won’t be enough to save Modi.
