The government is keen that the controversy over it having been leaked to Indian Express, which caused an uproar in Parliament on Monday and led to both Houses being adjourned, is brought to a swift end.

With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh away in the US, Pranab Mukherjee, the senior-most member after him in the cabinet, will preside over  a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to clear the reports for tabling.

The decision to convene the meeting was taken after Mukherjee spoke to the PM. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had also held consultations with senior party leaders.

The commission report was submitted on May 30. It had to be tabled by December 30, along with the Action Taken Report, but following the leak it will be made public earlier. “We expect the government to table the report as early as possible,’’ said spokesman Manish Tewari.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister P. K. Bansal also spoke of the “theoretical’’ possibility of tabling the report with the Speaker’s permission.

The opposition onslaught forced the government to refute charges that the 'leak' was timed to suit it and divide the opposition, which had been uniting against the UPA on several issues.
