Weddings these days are not always elaborate affairs. Planned on a Saturday and rushed through on a Sunday, these are fast-forward weddings that young couples are increasingly opting for. Blame busy lifestyles. IT professional Ajay Singh, who recently got married in a gurdwara over a
weekend, said: “My wife and I wanted a court marriage. But it is mandatory to give a month’s notice for a marriage to be registered. This was quicker. I was back at work on Monday.”

Amrish Pershad, a wedding planner, said: “Last season, I did about 10 weddings that were single-day affairs.” In most cases, both partners were employed and didn’t have the time for elaborate ceremonies, he said.

Arya Samaj weddings have become popular as a ‘simple, no-frills’ alternative. Surbhi Mittal, who got married at an Arya Samaj temple said: “I didn’t want any pomp and show, yet a traditional  marriage.”

The courts also register these weddings immediately. “Their number has risen by about 25 per cent,” said Arya Samaj official Joginder Khattar.

Exchanging marital vows over the phone could well be the next hot alternative.

And, offices may even start sanctioning wedding bonuses for those who marry over a weekend!
