The on-going controversy over Mayawati's growing assets had a new chapter added on Thursday.
DK Garg, a Delhi based advocate, filed an application before the Supreme Court seeking the reproduction of a UP governor's letter — one that had declined CBI the permission of prosecuting the chief
minister in the Rs 175 crore Taj Heritage Corridor Scam.
Manzoor Ali Khan, the petitioner, has contended that the June 5 governor's order was wrong and contrary to the Supreme Court observations. TV Rajeshwar, UP governor had refused to accord sanction to the CBI to prosecute Mayawati in the corruption case citing lack of evidence.
While mentioning the recent affidavit that Mayawati had filed along with her nomination papers of the Vidhan Parishad, Khan has raised questions about the UP chief minister's ever-growing assets.
According to Khan, Mayawait's wealth has grown by over 400 per cent in the past three years.
The application, filed by Supreme Court advocate DK Garg, states: "The observations made by the apex court are further proved from the recent affidavit filed by Mayawati disclosing her assets, both movable and immovable of more than Rs 52 crore."
According to it Mayawati's assets in 2004 were just Rs 11 crore.
At that time her property assets were just Rs 1.25 crore and she had jewellery worth Rs 31 lakh.
As per the recent affidavit she has jewellery worth over Rs one crore and property investment of more than Rs 36 crore.
Khan — who claimed the governor's order is being guarded as a top secret document — has submitted that in a corruption case against a politician, other politicians or political appointee like governor of a State cannot be treated as a property authority for granting sanction to prosecute a politician.
The Supreme Court has already issued notice to the Centre and the State Government on the petition.
