Gay activists in Mubai on Thursday said that though the Delhi High Court's verdict legalising homosexuality was landmark, there was still a long road towards removing social prejudices. "I am at a World Health Organisation conference at Bangkok representing the Humsafar Trust and today I
will enter the conference as a free man," Ashok Row Kavi, Chairman of the Humsafar Trust, told PTI.

The Humsafar trust, which works for gay rights and provides medical facilities for homosexuals, will be able to work better with this verdict, Kavi said.

"What this verdict means is that the extortion, blackmail and violence of police will stop. It will be much easier for homosexual men to go for anal checkups and to distribute condoms among gay men in Gujarat," he said.

However, the fight for gay rights and eradicating social prejudices was long one and this verdict was just one of the steps towards achieving them, Kavi said.

Another gay activist, Vikram Doctor said while the verdict was "fantastic", they were waiting to see the reaction of the Union government to the judgement.
