Poignant scenes marked the cremation in Hyderabad of Tummala Soumya Reddy, a student from Andhra Pradesh who was shot dead in the US 10 days ago. The large number of friends and relatives broke down as her brother Rajesh, an engineering student at Chennai, lit the pyre here on
Monday.

Earlier, the family had to cope with uncertainty about the arrival of her body from Delhi, where it came from the US on Saturday.

The coffin containing Soumya's body reached Hyderabad on Sunday morning though her parents had been told it would arrive by an Air India flight at night.

As a result, the body remained at the Hyderabad airport all day.

"In these days of the internet and instant communication, it is a very clear case of human insensitivity," said M. Sashidhar Reddy, the local Congress MLA, who called on the bereaved family.

Soumya, 23, was pursuing an MS degree in electrical engineering at the Southern Illinois University. She was found dead in her cousin Vikram Reddy's car near a lake on September 13.

Two days later, the body of Vikram, 27, a software engineer in Chicago, was found floating in the lake.
