Sourav Ganguly seemed to have reached the last leg as Pune Warriors skipper after the team owner, Subrata Roy, said on Thursday that the former India captain would stay on as a mentor next season.

"Sourav will be the mentor next season. We rather pushed him to play in IPL V as he is such a fantastic captain," Roy said, referring to Ganguly's appointment as skipper after Yuvraj Singh was ruled out due to illness. Roy defended Ganguly's selection: "Ganguly is a fine captain, our team lacked good Indian talent."

Ganguly has come under the scanner for his poor form with the bat. Although, the Warriors showed promise at the start, they have struggled ever since. They have won only four of their 13 games to be eliminated from the play-offs.

On Thursday, Ganguly told reporters: "I am still the captain, I'll captain for the whole season and that's about it," he said. "It (my form) has been patchy. I have played well at times and haven't played well at times. That's the way it goes in T20 format. There are other players around that haven't done well but when it comes to Ganguly, there is more criticism. That's been the trend for the last 15 years. But I expected to perform better."

Later, Ganguly was quoted as saying: "I did not want to be the captain but was asked to do so. Now I want to give youngsters a chance."
