Given the way off-field controversies have rocked the IPL, sports minister Ajay Maken feels cricket has become a game for a few.
“Cricket is no longer a sport, but a source of entertainment for a few,” Maken said on the sidelines of a function at the Nehru Stadium.
“I have nothing
personal against the cricket board but incidents of alleged molestation and corruption send a wrong message not only across the country but also at the global level.
“All this wouldn’t happen if there is transparency.”
Pointing to budding players, Maken said the cases of wrongdoing would have a negative impact on them.
“What has come to light is a tip of the iceberg. More skeletons will tumble out once the probe is complete,” he said.
Sources in the sports ministry told HT that the income tax department is expected to set up teams to probe money laundering in the IPL.
Even the Enforcement Department has begun an inquiry into the allegations of black money in the cash-rich league.
On the future course of action against the Board, Maken said: “Let the report come.”
