People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said “pseudo-nationalism” was at work to save Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah from investigations into his alleged involvement in the sex scandal exposed in the state in 2006. She told HT on the phone from Srinagar on
Wednesday that the clean chit given to Abdullah by the CBI was evidence of the exercise to cover up his involvement in the scam. “This pseudo nationalism is also working overtime to defame the PDP,” she said.

“We have nothing personal against Omar Abdullah. All what we want is a thorough investigation into the case so that the truth comes out,” she said.

The PDP leader said her party wants to know why the CBI “stopped investigations when these (big) names came to light”. She said even Justice B A Kirmani of the state’s high court observed in the course of hearings on the case in October 2007 that the CBI’s role left much to be desired.

On charges leveled in the state assembly on Wednesday against her party colleague and former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Beigh, suggesting that he had “illicit” relationships with several women, Mehbooba said there was “no connection between the two”.

Mehbooba said it was former state chief minister and NC leader “Farooq Abdullah who used to talk about the sex scandal during the last election campaign. We did not. Now, we have the document, so we are talking about it.”

The PDP leader said she had even criticised the government when her father Mufti Mohammed Sayeed was chief minister.
