At least 65 people were injured and some vehicles, government buildings and banks were damaged in fresh violence since Tuesday night in the Jammu region. Stone-pelting mobs clashed with the police, which teargassed them, resulting in injury to 25 people. Eight people were arrested for
rioting, a police spokesman said.

Later, some people attacked the People’s Democratic Party office at Gandhi Nagar while another group set fire to a BJP leader’s vehicle parked nearby.

The mob also attacked the office of the Director (Statistics and Economics) and a branch of the J&K Bank, setting them on fire and causing some damage to the buildings, he added.

The authorities had clamped curfew in the entire Jammu district on Tuesday night and deployed the army in some areas of the city after violence erupted late in the evening. Forty people, including nine policemen, were injured in the clashes.

Meanwhile, the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti called for a civil disobedience movement in Jammu and non-payment of taxes.

Samiti convenor Leela Karan Sharma told reporters that the civil disobedience movement would be launched with immediate effect in the Jammu region.

People would be told not to pay VAT and other taxes, electricity and water dues till the samiti's main demand for restoration of land to the Amarnath shrine board was met, Sharma said.
