Curfew continued for the second day on Monday in the city as the situation remained tense with people defying it to hold night-long protests over the Amarnath land transfer issue. The administration also imposed prohibitory orders in adjoining areas as the region observed a shutdown on a
call given by Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti demanding restoration of land to the Amarnath shrine board and removal of governor N N Vohra.

In heart of the city, Panjithirthi, Puranmandi, city-chowk areas, Shakti Nagar and Janipur areas, people took out torch rallies defying curfew and shouted anti-governor and anti-police slogans during the night.

They also burnt effigies of Vohra and tyres in Parade, Tilak Road and Shakti Nagar areas. Police fired tear gas and used batons at around 2345 hours last night to disperse them.

"We have continued curfew for second day as a precautionary measure in Jammu, Muthi, Bantalab, Mishriwala, Pukhoo and Nagrota," Jammu Deputy Commissioner Mandeep K Bandari said.

He said the situation was tense but under control. Bandari, however, said that curfew was lifted in Gandhinagr, Satwari, Sidhra, Narwal, Trikuta Nagar Bahu Fort, R S Pura, Bishnah, Arnina, Dhrota, Kanachak, Akhnoor and Khour areas of the district since Sunday evening.
