Taslima nasreen is more than willing to give up her Swedish nationality, if she is granted the Indian citizenship. Earlier, in an operation past midnight, central security agencies whisked away Nasreen to a “safe house” on the Capital’s periphery to move her away from the public glare
and help cap the controversy over her stay in India.

Speaking from an undisclosed “safe house”, Taslima said that her Swedish passport didn’t pose any problem, as she was willing to surrender to become an Indian.

“If the Indian Government gives me the citizenship, I’m ready to give up my Swedish nationality. It is a very small matter for me because I am craving to stay in this country,” Taslima Nasreen told HT.

“In Europe, the countries are all eager to give me citizenship. So why can’t I get citizenship from the world’s largest democracy that upholds all those principles that I fight for,” Taslima said.

However, the writer — hounded out of Kolkata — continued to remain in the limelight through the day, with demands from the RSS to seek a political refugee status for her and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi offering to put up the controversial author in Gujarat.

The Congress was quick to react to Modi’s offer. Parliamentary Affairs Minister PR Dasmunsi wondered if the Gujarat leader intended to “atone” for his previous sins, an oblique reference to the 2002 riots.
