Shutting down the Metro creates more problems than it solves With reference to the report India Gate, Raisina Hill sealed; Metro shut down (December 30), one fails to understand why the Delhi government shuts down Metro stations at its convenience. Such a decision creates
a lot of trouble for lakhs of commuters. The government must realise that it’s not only protesters whod use the Metro. Also, the huge crowds at India Gate and Jantar Mantar prove that shutting down a few stations alone doesn’t deter protesters.

Wake up and smell the coffee

This refers to the report Wake up India. She is dead (December 30). It’s really sad to know that the Delhi gangrape victim passed away in a Singapore hospital. Will the UPA now declare the case as the rarest of the rare and give the death sentence to the six guilty? Hanging the guilty is the only way to make potential rapists think twice before ruining women’s lives. The national rage against this incident must make the government wake up and smell the coffee. We need stricter laws for not just rape but also other crimes related to women, such as female foeticide and dowry.
Balram Misra, via email

I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family of the gang rape victim. Other countries and the United Nations are justified in their condemnation of the UPA, which has failed to take appropriate and timely action against the perpetrators. The authorities concerned must promise all the women in India that such a horrific incident will never recur. People are angry about the high rate of crime across the nation, slow judicial process and low rate of conviction, which are a result of an inefficient government. If UPA leaders have any shame left in them, they should accept their mistakes and dissolve the government.
