Anna is losing his sheen but people are fed up with corruption
This refers to the report Anna protest reaches PM house (July 29). It is true that the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement is losing its sheen but this does not suggest that people are not fed up with the
corrupt political system or that they are ignoring the crusade that drew huge crowds last year. With infighting in Team Anna coming to the fore, it seems the middle class is disillusioned. This battle against corruption is stuck amid people who want to support Hazare but have little means to do so. In the absence of a political alternative, they think that not much can be done about corruption. But no matter how disillusioned the middle class is, it wants to get rid of corruption at any cost.

People energised by dream of eradicating corruption and suitably sensitised by the Anna Hazare movement are agitating to free the country from the shackles of graft. But a single wave cannot wipe out corruption. Besides campaigning against corrupt politicians, Hazare must also equip people with the knowledge on how to deal with corruption, especially those of a small magnitude that occur on a daily basis. Instead of taking up too many issues, Team Anna should stay focused on the single objective of implementing a strong Lokpal Bill.

Hospitals must heal themselves
The report Hospital accused of allowing four-day-old to die over R200 (July 28) is simply shocking. It is unbelievable that any hospital, leave alone a government one, can let a baby die because the impoverished parents couldn’t arrange to pay R200 as an advance to the hospital. This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred. Besides exemplary punishment to those found guilty, a lesson in sensitivity and humanity must be given to those who handle payments in hospitals.
