Rahul Gandhi must deliver on all the promises he made in Jaipur
With reference to the editorial All ready for the big fight (Our Take, January 21), in his first speech after being made the vice-president of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi called a spade a spade and rightly pointed out some of the weaknesses in his party. One must praise Rahul for acknowledging that power-brokers and defectors are doing a lot of harm to the Congress. His resolve to keep them out of the party reminds one of the late Rajiv Gandhi, who, too, made a similar pledge when he became prime minister. Though Rahul made many promises in Jaipur, it remains to be seen whether he will deliver on all of them or not.

There is no doubt that the Opposition will criticise the Congress for its dynastic set-up. But the truth is that the Gandhi family has kept the party united for years. Unlike the BJP, where almost all the senior members are fighting with each other today, the Congress stands united simply because they have a strong leadership in the form of the Gandhis.

The BJP’s making a big mistake
With reference to the report RSS reaches out to Advani to push for Gadkari re-election (January 20), the BJP is making one mistake after another. Its president, Nitin Gadkari, is facing serious corruption charges. But the RSS wants to bend the party rules and elect him for another term. But BJP members must not commit this blunder if they want the party to win the 2014 general elections. All senior BJP leaders should sink their differences, work together and should not give in to the RSS’s pressure.
