At least eight suspects have been picked up as Meghalaya police claimed to have made 'some breakthroughs' in the e-mail threat purportedly by Indian Mujahhideen militants to BJP leader LK Advani.
"The e-mail was not a hoax . Investigation is on right lines and breakthroughs have been
achieved. But certain facts have to be corroborated and correlated before making anything public," IG (special branch) SB Singh told reporters.
The e-mail threatened to kill Advani during his September 29 Shillong visit.
The cyber cafe from where the e-mail was sent has been identified and at least eight people have been picked up for questioning, Singh said, adding more persons were likely to be picked up.
"Police teams were conducting checks at various places across the city and some people associated with the malicious email has been identified," he said refusing to disclose the identity of the suspects.
Asked whether there was any presence of Indian Mujahhideen militants in the north eastern state, Singh said, "Jehadi militants have a broad-based global network. Nothing can be ruled out."
Meghalaya police was in touch with central agencies to find out if there were any similarities with the threat to Advani and the e-mail sent by militants during the recent strikes in Delhi and other places, he added.
