Not many music lovers know that legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, whose voice has immortalised thousands of songs, took a one year break from singing on the advice of renowned
classical maestro Ustad Amir Khan.

The younger brother of the 80-year-old Lata and musician Hridaynath Mangeshkar disclosed this untouched aspect of singer's life during his concert 'Me and Didi' here.

He said, "Didi was having some problem with her vocal chord during 1960s and once took such a high note that she noticed her voice was breaking and getting flat. This incident happened for the first time in her life and she took it up with Ustad Amir Khan. Khan sahab advised Lata that the best thing would be to undergo keep silence for six months and not sing for an year."

Hridaynath also noted that the career of Lata, also known as 'the Nightingale of India' was at her prime during that period.

"Despite her rising stardom, she decided to put the advice in practice and even stayed out of Mumbai," he said.

Lata returned to the world of Bollywood music after a year in 1962 with Bees Saal Baad whose music was given by Hemant Kumar.

She sang the track Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Din in the film for which she also won the Filmfare award for Best Female Playback Singer.
