CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury on Monday met Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav and discussed with him the current political situation, on a visit that will see him holding talks with the country's major political players.
Yechury, who played a key role in bringing Nepal's Maoists to
mainstream politics, arrived here last evening to hold talks with leaders of major political parties including Maoist chief Prachanda.
The Indian leader called on Yadav at his Shitwal Niwas residence today and discussed with him the current political situation, the on-going peace process and the constitution-drafting process, sources at the President's office said.
Besides Prachanda, the Indian leader will also hold talks with major political players, including Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal during his three-day stay in Kathmandu.
The visit comes at a time when differences have widened between the Unified CPN-Maoists and the UML-led ruling coalition, and is being termed as significant by political observers here.
Yechury is believed to have played a major role in parleys that led to the peace accord of 2006 and saw the Maoists joining the political mainstream.
The transition to democracy in Nepal has however been frought by tensions between the political parties, with the Maoists accusing others of overruling the sentiments of the people.
