Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today rejected opposition's demand for an adjournment motion on the issue of rise in prices, dismissing charges that the matter involved government's failure to discharge its constitutional duties. "I appreciate the concern expressed by the opposition over
price rise. The House certainly has a right to discuss it," Kumar said, adding, however, the issue should be only for discussion.

"Adjournment motion can be extracted only in case of failure of the government to perform constitutional and legal duties," she said disallowing the motions.

As soon as the Speaker disallowed the adjournment motion, opposition members trooped into the well in protest.

Amid ruckus, Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken rose to introduce the statutory resolution for extension of President's rule in Jharkhand but he could not be heard.

Following this, Kumar adjourned the House for the day.
