Had it not been for the sharp memory of a police constable, the two most sensational crimes reported from the Vasant Vihar-Vasant Kunj belt in the past six months would not have been cracked so soon. It was the presence of mind of Constable Kaptan Singh that led the south district police
to arrest the killers of call centre employee Jigeesha Ghosh and television journalist Soumya Vishwanathan.

Singh, who was earlier posted at Masoodpur village identified one of the suspects Baljeet Malik alias Poppy from the CCTV footage shown to him.

Singh is presently posted at Vasant Vihar police station. Soon after Jigeesha went missing, the CCTV footage from Sarojini Nagar market was circulated to all the police stations for information on the persons. Malik did not have any criminal background, so matching his photo with the police dossiers would also have not been of much help.

“As Malik was frequently seen in the area, the beat constable was able to identify him immediately. Malik was traced to his house in Masoodpur village. He was grilled for several hours and he confessed to the crime. His arrest helped us nab the other three accused,” said HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south).

Singh was familiar with the topography of the Masoodpur village and he had seen Malik frequenting the gymnasium in the area.

Local intelligence was developed and police came to know that Malik had recently started moving around with the main accused Ravi Kapoor.
