The run of luck for Rajkumar finally ended on Saturday. The main accused in the battered baby case, who had outfoxed several police teams for weeks, was finally arrested in the New Delhi railway station.
“Police nabbed Mohammad Dilshad alias Rajkumar, who had handed over the
toddler to his 14-year-old girlfriend, minutes before boarding a train. His frequent bank transactions did him in,” said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).
Rajkumar faces multiple charges, including abandoning a child to conceal birth, subjecting a minor to sexual assault, criminal conspiracy and cheating. 
A resident of southwest Delhi’s Dwarka and a small-time cab operator, Rajkumar had been on the run since mid-January and hitchhiked across seven cities to avoid the police.
On January 26, HT first reported on the toddler as she battled for life after evident physical abuse by Rajkumar’s girlfriend.
The police claimed Rajkumar confessed that he had offered to keep the baby after having been approached by his friend Manoj and his wife Pratima on October 13. Pratima was also arrested on Saturday in Patna.
“Rajkumar kept the baby at his Dwarka apartment till his wife Tabassum left for her parents’ home in Mumbai. That’s when Rajkumar brought in the 14-year-old girl and they stayed there along with the toddler,” Sharma said, adding that it was during this time that the toddler was named Falak.
After Tabassum returned from Mumbai, the police said, Rajkumar shifted the girl to a friend’s house. On January 12, he shifted her to yet another location — a rented house in Mahipalpur — before starting off for Mumbai to attend to his physically-challenged son.
