The Delhi Police have lost trail of a key Mumbai link that could have helped trace the parents of the battered two-year-old girl fighting for life at the AIIMS trauma centre since January 18.

Rajkumar, boyfriend of the 14-year-old girl who admitted the baby in AIIMS, has given the
police the slip in Mumbai after offering to surrender.

The 22-year-old taxi driver allegedly brought the baby to his Delhi home from a woman and even sexually abused his girlfriend. His family stays in Mumbai.

Sources said two Delhi Police teams went to Mumbai on Friday but failed to hunt down Rajkumar despite being in touch with him over the phone.

Rajkumar, the sources said, had wanted to surrender and the police teams left for Mumbai only after he provided his address. He has now switched off his mobile phone.

A senior Delhi Police officer said investigators in touch with Rajkumar had at one point almost convinced him to come to Delhi and join the investigation.

“It appears he got scared and thought he would be accused of physically abusing the 14-year-old girl who took the baby to the AIIMS trauma centre,” the officer said.

The police have questioned Rajkumar’s wife, who came to Delhi a few days ago, but think she has no direct role in the case.

In the AIIMS neurosurgery ICU, the baby’s condition remains serious but stable. “Her vital parameters are stable but brain function is impaired. We need to wait and watch,” a senior doctor said.
