With no major breakthrough in the Shobhit Modi murder case even after two months of investigation, Delhi police commissioner has ordered a fresh probe. The crime branch of Delhi police will investigate the case from scratch. Shobhit, a 20-year-old engineering student, was found murdered
near his residence in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj.

“There might be a possibility that the local police have missed a link due to which we have so far failed to make any breakthrough. The crime branch has been asked to probe from every possible angle and check if there is a missing link,” said BK Gupta, Delhi police commissioner. Gupta feels the investigation was always on the right track and they have put their best men on the job. “Crime branch was always part of the investigation but when a drug addict confessed to the crime and we all thought the case was solved, the unit stopped further investigation,” Gupta added. Defending the investigation done by the south district in the case so far, Amulya Patnaik, joint commissioner of police (southern range) said, “We have examined over 7,500 persons, including Shobhit’s friends, employees of the mall, the auto-rickshaw driver, and local criminals. We have now started looking for Shobhit’s friends about whom his family didn’t have any knowledge.”

“Two teams are keeping a close watch on the investigation and re-association of the crime branch would help the probe. They will start the probe in afresh but with our help only.”

Meanwhile, Shobhit’s family held a protest against Delhi police on Saturday, demanding CBI probe into the case.
