A high-level enquiry was ordered into the stampede in a government school in New Delhi on Thursday by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who said action will be taken against those found guilty. "We are very sad that five innocent lives have been lost in the accident. Appropriate action will
be taken against
those found lax in their duty. Area Deputy Commissioner will conduct an enquiry," she said after visiting the hospital
where injured children are being treated.

Dikshit said the stampede took place when some students were rushing up a staircase while some others were running
down and ruled out rumours that the accident happened due to electric current passing through the water collected there
after heavy rains.

The Government has announced compensation of Rs. one lakh and Rs. 50,000 each respectively to the next of kin of the
deceased and the injured.

While five girls died in the stampede, 27 other students were injured. "Four of the injured are in ICUs in serious
conditions, while some are in the trauma centre. Their treatment will be free of cost," Dikshit said.
