Parliament’s monsoon session beginning on Monday promises to be stormy. The BJP is trying hard to bring together the entire Opposition for a combined assault on the UPA government on a range of issues including the price rise, the fuel price hike and the spat of train
accidents.

But any such unity is unlikely to last long, as BJP also intends to disrupt the House over Sunday’s arrest of former Gujarat minister of state for home, Amit Shah — an issue few other opposition parties will endorse. The Congress is banking on the Amit Shah issue to divide the opposition. It will also try to put the BJP on the defensive by raking up the illegal mining scam in Karnataka.

If the government also introduces the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha — it has already been passed in the Rajya Sabha — the opposition will once again get divided, albeit along different lines, with the BJP and Left supporting the bill, but numerous others opposing it.

In a bid to foster Opposition unity, the BJP has decided to bring an adjournment motion against the government on the issue of price rise on Tuesday.
