The postmortem report of eleven-year-old Shanno Khan, who reportedly died after standing in the sun at an MCD-run school, has revealed that she was suffering from “brain fever”.
The autopsy, conducted by a panel of three doctors at Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital (LNJP), revealed that
Shanno did not die of “heat stroke”.
“The post mortem examination of the body has revealed that her brain was swollen. On examination, it was revealed that she was suffering from meningococcemia — brain fever in common terms. There were no external injury marks on her body,” said a doctor who conducted the postmortem at LNJP hospital.
The doctors said they would send the reports to the pathological laboratory on Wednesday.
“The examination of the medical slides at the pathological laboratory will give a clearer picture. She did have a history of fits but it cannot be aggravated by heat,” said the doctor. The doctors are also considering the medical case sheet of Shanno at Maharishi Valmiki Hospital where she was first admitted.
“When she was admitted at Valmiki hospital, the body temperature was normal. Her eyes were dilated and the pulse rate was feeble,” said the doctor.
Police said they had examined independent eyewitnesses in the case who have said that Shanno was punished inside the classroom. Class teacher Manju (26), who was again interrogated on Tuesday, reiterated that she had asked Shanno to stand inside the classroom for a few minutes.
“We are, however, waiting for the report as the hospital is yet to hand it over to us. We are recording the statements of the school staff and other students. So far, we have come to know that the student was asked to stand inside the class,” said a senior police officer investigating the case. Police said she was taken to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital around 3.30 pm on April 15, three hours after school got over.
