The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to reinstate a probationary IFS officer Mahaveer Singhvi who was sacked by the Ministry of External Affairs on charges of stalking a woman and attempting to bribe officials in a case. A bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir, while upholding the
Delhi High Court's August 2008 judgement which had directed reinstatment of Singhvi, also asked the government to pay him Rs. 25,000 as costs for litigation.

Singhvi had fought for eight years challenging his dismissal on the ground that he was falsely implicated in the stalking case by a woman whom he claimed to have spurned.

He was appointed as IFS officer in 1999 but was dismissed after two and half years.

The Delhi High Court directed his reinstatement after holding that the sacking was motivated by malice and no opportunity was given by the authorites to him for defence.

However, the Centre chose to appeal in the apex court which today dismissed the same.
