Although the autopsy report of 11-year-old Shanno Khan is expected only on Monday, the police said the initial reports suggest she was killed after her medical problems aggravated due to staying out in the sun for a long time. “She was epileptic and had a history of lung and
respiratory problems. Her nose bled as well. All these problems were aggravated when she was punished,” a senior police officer said.

“Another reason why her condition got worse seems to be the administrating of a drug which she was allergic to. We are trying to find if this was done by the school, her parents or the hospital,” the officer said.

Shanno was allegedly thrashed and made to stand in the sun for two hours by a teacher on April 15. The police added there was a clear delay in medical treatment due to which she slipped into coma and later died.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has also set up two separate enquiries. “The vigilance and education departments are conducting separate investigations. We will take action after the reports come,” MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said.

The police are waiting for the postmortem report and have not arrested the female teacher, Manju (26), accused of punishing Shanno, leading to her death. The police had earlier said the initial postmortem report suggested there were no injury marks on her body.

Delhi Police spokesperson, Rajan Bhagat said, “No arrest has been made yet in the case and the autopsy report is expected to come by Monday.”

“The teacher is not absconding. We are questioning her. We have not arrested her yet as we are collecting evidence in the case,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Atul Katiyar said.
