The Centre would spend Rs. 2870 crore on sanitation programmes in the country during 2003-04, the Drinking Water Supply Secretary in the Union Government, said here on Friday. "The total sanitation programme envisages construction of toilets, safe drinking water and to create awareness about
sanitation among the masses and school going children," Palat Mohan Dass told reporters.

Palat said the Centre was providing 40 litres per capita per day potable drinking water to 93 per cent of the total population of the country.

He said the remaining seven per cent population would be provided the same quantity of safe drinking water by the end of 2004.

Palat said the position of sanitation and safe drinking water in Haryana was "satisfactory" but the water table was going down and it was a matter of concern.

He said the Central Government was taking steps to recharge the ground water.
