The girl had been betrayed by her upper caste boyfriend Sonu, who, along with 11 friends, had sexually assaulted her on September 9.
They even reportedly made an MMS of the rape — though the police are yet to confirm it — which pushed the girl’s father to commit suicide on September 18.
As news of the suicide spread, outraged Dalits barricaded the office of the superintendent of police (SP) and sat on a dharna at the mortuary, allowing the cremation to take place only after the first arrest was made on September 22.
The police are yet to reveal the identity of the second man arrested.
“During interrogation, Situ, who was arrested on September 22, revealed the names of 11 others,” said B Satheesh Balan, superintendent of police, Hisar. Eight teams are on the lookout for the rest of the accused.
Tonsured for having ‘paan’
Madhubani (Bihar): Being a minor girl and having a paan (betel leaf) offered by a youth was bad enough. But what was worse was not being able to pay a fine of Rs. 21,000 imposed for the offence by the panchayat a village in north Bihar’s Madhubani district recently. The offence was so big that the minor was severely beaten and partly tonsured by furious panchayat.
The barbaric act was discovered when Sabina (name changed) was admitted to the local health centre. Confirming the incident, Madhubani SP Saurabh Kumar said, “A team led by the deputy SP is conducting raids to nab the accused, who have gone into hiding.”
