The wheels to impeach Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf were set in motion on Friday with the Punjab provincial assembly’s announcement to start proceedings on August 11 and Sindh provincial assembly to start the following day. Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s party
has decided to rejoin the cabinet after the ruling coalition decided to impeach Musharraf, a party official said.

Sharif’s party quit the cabinet led by the Pakistan People’s Party in May because of the coalition’s failure to reinstate judges dismissed by Musharraf.

President Musharraf started consultations with Attorney General Malik Qayyum and Sindh Govenor Dr Ishrat Ul Ibad of the MQM party. But PPP chairman Asif Ali Zardari declared that talks were underway with the MQM, the third largest party, to secure its backing for the impeachment proceedings.

The ruling alliance claims it had more than 295 members required for the impeachment. PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal claimed that the coalition had eight more members than what was required. The number will increase further as impeachment motion begins, he added.
