Pakistani police boarded the plane carrying former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday after he refused to hand over his passport on arrival in Islamabad, airport officials said. The two-time ex-premier declined to give his passport to officials on the Pakistan International Airlines
flight from London, saying that he wanted to go to the immigration counter himself, one senior official told AFP.

Police commandos in black uniforms surrounded the plane on the tarmac as soon as it came to a halt at Islamabad airport. Other passengers disembarked the plane.

"The officials asked him to cooperate for security reasons but he said that he could not give them his passport. He said that he himself wanted to walk to the counter," the airport official said.

A top government official said that an officer from Pakistan's anti-graft body meanwhile was waiting at the airport with arrest warrants for Sharif relating to alleged corruption.
